Penwith Environmental Network (PEN) is a registered charity (no. 295087) with the objective “to promote the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment, and to educate and inform the public and others in all related matters.”
PEN has had many differing faces over the years, set up in 1984; it became a charity in 1987. Originally it was known as Penwith Green Centre and for many years it ran The Green Fair as St.John’s Hall in Penzance. PEN was open for the public to access information about environmental issues in Penwith. The charity has gradually evolved into a network promoting environmental issues in a local context, increasing environmental awareness through education and networking with other groups in Penwith. The membership of PEN has waxed and waned, but it remains a viable vehicle for members of the community to access green spaces. It is hoped that PEN will again grow and gain more support for furthering its aims.
PEN’s work is now centred on managing Millennium Woods (click on respective tab in Projects), and some PEN members still frequent the Edible Forest, wildlife garden and community garden at Love Lane (click on respective tab in Projects), which is now under management by local residents in partnership with Cormac. Volunteer opportunities exist for those who can self manage.
